Getagig.info

There are some major updates over at http://www.getagig.info

Users of Getagig now have the option to comment on promoters and venues or promote themselves on the site! Just go to one of the listings pages and scroll to the bottom to see how it’s done. Hopefully this will create a greater understanding of what’s going on in the various local music scenes across the UK. The idea is that as users comment, an idea about the good and bad venues and promoters will appear, plus anyone (i.e Sound Engineers) wanting to put themselves up for work can do so.

Jolly good.

Convolution Reverb & Impulse Responses

I was looking around the internet and came across an incredible blog which hosts some of the finest examples of hardware modeled reverb impulse responses I’ve found – best of all they are donationware which means you can download now and pay what you think they are worth (or download now and offer a donation at a later date when you have the money).

You can use these reverb impulses in any plug-in that supports convolution reverb. For Mac, Apple’s Pro Logic - Space Designer supports them. For Windows SIR supports them.

A direct link to the reverb impulse entries on the blog can be found here: Impulse Sets

What are Reverb Impulse Responses?

“In audio signal processing, convolution reverb is a process for digitally simulating the reverberation of a physical or virtual space.” – Wikipedia

What’s good about convolution reverb is that you can model practically any space in existence. These spaces can then be used with a plug-in to simulate whichever space has been modeled. For example, you may want your vocal track to sound like it was recorded in the Sistine Chapel – if that space was modeled it could be done.

Not only real life spaces have to be modeled, it is also possible to model hardware such as a Lexicon Reverb for example – which means you have practically free access to hundreds of hardware boxes without having to fork out huge sums of money for the privilege. All you need are some impulse responses and the right plug-ins.

A brief recording history 1920 – 1960.

I was recently reading Tape-Op magazine and came across a very interesting article titled “A brief recording history 1920 – 1960″ by Lewis L. Durham. For my own learning experience and hopefully yours, I’ve taken from it what I believe to be most interesting and compiled my own article. Some call it plagiarism, I call it the big share.

Another great thing is that I’ve scrawled links across the article so if you need further reading on a subject or word, just click the link and you’ll be whisked away to a world of forgotten intelligence. Read more »

The importance of guitar tone.

Guitar tone is totally neglected by so many guitar players, which confuses me because well, it’s like a singer not worrying about how they project their voice. It’s totally essential. Read more »

My thoughts on live shows for bands.

When I first started doing live shows I made a number of moves which on reflection, didn’t help. Don’t get me wrong, everything is a learning curve and from some of the “mistakes” came good times. But regardless, here’s some thoughts on my live music experiences. Read more »
